IN PREPARATION
Many scientific papers and books on coral reefs, restoration, effects climate change, tidal energy, and stabilization of atmospheric carbon. An optical disk library and films of the F. W. Goro science and technology photograph collection, including the first underwater photographs of the Great Barrier Reef and other reefs around the world is in preparation, along with the world’s largest collection of coral reef photographs from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Educational films on coral reef problems in over 15 Caribbean, Pacific, and Indian Ocean countries are in preparation.
GLOBAL CORAL REEF ALLIANCE
President and co-founder. The Alliance aims to represent professional coral reef researchers and others concerned about worldwide reef deterioration in order to inform the public and policymakers about the ecological and environmental importance of coral reefs, the anthropogenic factors causing their deterioration, the policy steps needed to restore and safeguard their productivity and species, and to support programs for reef conservation, monitoring, and research on their sustainable management. This has been done through repeated television and radio interviews, and lectures to fishermen's cooperatives, schoolchildren, and the general public in coral reef countries. The Alliance prepared numerous briefing papers on coral reef issues and led efforts by Non Governmental Organizations and coral reef countries to protect and manage reefs in the international environmental agreements reached in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Biodiversity Convention at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in June 1992 and the UN Conference on Small Island States in Barbados in 1994. GCRA pushed strongly for international policies resulting in effective protection and restoration of coral reefs, performed research on reef eutrophication, coral bleaching, reef restoration, and provided scientific analysis to support local and national coral reef protection and environmental management organizations in many Caribbean, Pacific, and Indian Ocean countries, for national policies for biological tertiary sewage treatment and establishment of whole watershed and coastal zone environmental protected and management areas. GCRA has taken the lead in documenting coral bleaching events worldwide, and relating them to climate and weather anomalies as well as locally-derived environmental stresses. GCRA has developed most of the global database on the distribution of coral reef diseases, and is spearheading a tema of international coral reef researchers to document the spread and mechanism of attack of all coral reef diseases, identify the pathogens, and determine the cause of their recent spread. GCRA's research focuses on developing new technology utilizing electrolysis of sea water to "grow" underwater structures for reef restoration, enhanced coral growth, fish and shellfish habitat, shore protection, and adaptation to rising sea level.
CARIBBEAN CORAL GROWTH NEWSLETTER & JAMAICA CORAL BLEACHING NOTES
Editor and publisher (1987-1991). Three issues of each circulated to Caribbean marine laboratories about Caribbean coral growth measurements and coral beaching trends in Jamaica. The low cost project, supported by the Charles A. Lindbergh fund, involved cooperation of researchers across the region making non-destructive field growth measurements and bleaching observations of the major Caribbean reef building coral, Montastrea annularis.
EDUCATION
HARVARD UNIVERSITY: Ph.D. in Biogeochemistry. HEW Mining Geology Fellowship for work on factors affecting unit cell lattice sizes of hydrothermal uraninite (with H. D. Holland). Research on the role of nitrifying bacteria as sources of nitrous oxide in various habitats, production of greenhouse gases from soils, and on the effects of perturbations to the carbon and nitrogen cycles on atmospheric chemistry (with M. McElroy & S. Wofsy).
WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION: Research fellow in chemical oceanography. Research on chemistry of coral skeletons and on mathematical modelling of biological and physical factors controlling rates of biogeochemical processes in sediments and the deep ocean and their effects on the rates and frequencies of information preservation in the observable paleoclimatic record.
